The value of the hydro industry lies not so much in the national scale of its output as in the local solutions it creates. Small Hydro (<5MW) was not covered in the COP26 debates, yet it is the only renewables sector which is locally designed, developed, constructed and operated. And hydro works with, not against, projects to develop habitats, biodiversity and flourishing natural capital. In short, Alba Energy represents Scotland’s native renewable source and we intend to bring attention to the importance and sustainability of what we do.
- There are more than 600 small-scale hydro schemes in Scotland
- Collectively, they amount to >350 MW of renewable generation capacity
- On average, these schemes will generate approximately 1200 Gigawatt hours of renewable electricity each year – enough to power more than 350,000 homes
Our goal is to connect remote hydroelectric producers across Scotland and share information which is not available elsewhere.
Alba Energy’s new website will enable members, the press, and the public to access a wealth of information about the sector and our cause. We hope to provide a hub of useful knowledge, outlining key issues that we face within the sector and providing topical news and relevant insights.
Membership is open to all privately owned hydro development schemes at both the development and production stages of their life.
